"It's definitely worth noting that it costs more than you'd think. In this sense, it's an excellent match for the titles want out of Square Enix. It's possible that there's nothing to gain from other companies copying it," Asano told 4gamer.Fortunately the cost of this won't deter Square Enix from releasing more games in this fashion.
The remake version of Live a Live is set to be released exclusively on Nintendo Switch in July, while a remake version of Dragon Quest III is currently being developed. There are plenty of other games which could benefit from this style and it will be fascinating to find out what Square Enix does with HD-2D next. Although the company has clearly invested in this graphic style, Asano went on to reveal that there is no actual "definitive guideline," and it will be evolving in each new game.
"We don't have something like that. The way the plot is presented varies in each movie, which means that the HD-2D-style is different each time. When you play Live A Live for example the setting in the prehistoric area will differ from the sci-fi scenario.
The range of expression we offer has increased thanks to the new concepts we've come up with. "While the price could be prohibitive for some developers, HD-2D certainly has worked as a selling point for many gamers. I hope we'll witness Square Enix find new ways to further develop the style as well as a host of other games to come!
