Square Enix's HD-2D titles have attracted a great deal of positive interest from gamers. Games like Octopath Traveler and Triangle Strategy have really captured the attention of those who love retro, partly due to their unique art style.
In a recent interview with 4Gamer (translated from Nintendo Everything), Triangle Strategy producer Tomoya Asano addressed the graphic style, and the ways it's being used in future games developed by the company. When the interviewer expressed surprise at the fact that more independent games haven't been able to replicate the style, Asano revealed the reason being that it's pretty expensive!
"It's probably worth noting that it's priced higher than you'd think. It's a good match for the games that people want from Square Enix. There's probably nothing to gain from companies that copy it," Asano told 4gamer.Fortunately the cost doesn't hinder Square Enix from releasing more games that follow this model.
Remakes of Live a Live is set for release exclusively on Nintendo Switch in July, while a remake version of Dragon Quest III is currently in the process of being made. There are several other games that could benefit from the style, and it'll be interesting to see exactly what Square Enix does with HD-2D in the future. While the company has definitely invested in this design style, Asano went on to clarify that there is no any current "definitive bible," and it will evolve with each game.
