The success stories we do receive are just a few rare exceptions. The stars needed to align for Among Us to find its players long after its launch and perhaps the best example before that - without having the support of a large publisher was Undertale in the year 2017.
It's because of this that RuneScape The Initial 20 Years isn't just essential to all fans of games, but for all those who are concerned about the direction in which gaming development is taking. It's a reminder that we must support the indie community that is always fighting for attention in a huge marketplace.
But most of all it's a way to be proud of that humble beginning. The gaming industry may seem like an absolutely disgusting space when it comes to certain aspects (because it is often) However, in the midst are passionate game developers with an knowledge they wish to give to us.
We all remember wonderful childhood memories of playing around Gielinor Not because some large corporation sold us an item, but because three brothers had an intense passion and their families believed in them. These are the people we have to thank for our memories, not higher-ups over at Amazon or Activision Blizzard.
Steamforged Games recently announced that it will partner with developer Jagex which will see the release of RuneScape to tabletops later this year. The MMORPG will be getting not one, but two new tabletop games: a table game and a tabletop rpg game. The board game will launch on Kickstarter in the coming year, while the tabletop RPG will head straight to stores.
Both games will take their inspiration from the world of fantasy in RuneScape, Gielinor. The games will feature those characters, adventure as well as locations they MMORPG has made famous over its lengthy time. The board game will take up or five people on a quest-based campaign through the vast lands of Gielinor.
In the announcement released by Steamforged, participants will "craft and upgrade equipment to improve their character, cook special recipes, engage with NPCs, and test their talents while exploring different parts of the world". Just as with the game, players will encounter side-quests that make the game more real.
