If anything the next expansion should to take a step back from trying to break the mold. The core of World of Warcraft is already an amazing game. It's quickly approaching the 18th anniversary mark and there's a reason why it's stood up to time while so several other MOODs have come and gone. It may not always get things right but whenever it succeeds, nowhere else I'd rather be than Azeroth.
Fantastic moments in PC gaming are small-sized celebrations of our top gaming memories. Before I even understood the way computers work, I had been playing World of Warcraft. In the Burning Crusade, the game's first expansion, just been launched, and I was making my way toward Hellfire Peninsula as a clueless tiny tauren warrior. I wanted to find out what new was available, and had been waiting an excruciatingly long time for a chance to climb to level 58 to be able to access Hellfire Peninsula, the area that was newly added.
The Dark Portal, your doorway to the unknown, was built inside The Blasted Lands, a area that was somewhat terrifying for a high-level character. You had to dodge the demons who carried huge axes in order to reach the stone steps leading to the portal. The massive, swirling gate with the cloaked figures that held it up stared you down upon entering, as if it was at any point they could decide that you weren't worthy enough to join their realm.
When I stepped through The Dark Portal, the bright expanse of Outland came out in front of me. The bright purple sky spilled into the orange mountains of Hellfire Peninsula. For someone who had little familiarity with the cosmic realm of Warcraft in the early days it was a stunning view. The moment when fantasy collided with sci-fi is probably the moment when the specific mix of visual themes first began to worm into my brain, where it's been ever since--reignited with the help of parts of Elden Ring.
