Electronic Arts announced Tuesday that this fall's planned FIFA 23 is the last game, for a span of more than 30 years and carry the brand of world football's governing body. From July 2023 onwards, EA Sports' soccer flagship will be renamed EA Sports FC.
"The introduction of EA SPORTS FC will not alter any current EA Sports global football games, and EA and FIFA are looking forward to launching the most comprehensive, best-looking EA SPORTS FIFA ever later this fall," EA said in a statement. "Our final FIFA product will also have more game modes, features, teams, leagues, players, and competitions than the previous edition."
The fall of 2012, Cam Weber, EA Sports' director of operations and the top executive stated that the company was reviewing its licensing agreement with FIFA considering the vast patchwork of licenses the game has already received, from different soccer leagues and teams, and what the FIFA brand actually added to the game. The following day, it was announced that EA had applied for trademarks in the U.K. for a game named "EA Soccer FC."
In the statement issued on Tuesday, EA CEO Andrew Wilson said EA Sports FC will be "the largest and most impactful football club in the world, at the epicenter of football fandom."
"For over 30 years, we've been building one of the biggest football communities in the world -- with hundreds of million of athletes, thousands athletes partners, as well as hundreds of leagues, federations and teams" Wilson said. "EA SPORTS FC will be the home club for each one of them, and for football fans everywhere.
Looking at the details the statement exposes the amount of branding FIFA has was in a game that also is exclusive to the UEFA Champions League tournament, the English Premier League, most of Italy's Serie A clubs, South America's Copa Libertadores club championship, as well as other brands not operated or controlled by FIFA. The statement released on Tuesday from Electronic Arts mentioned that EA Sports FC will be able to offer "more than 300 individual licensed partners that will allow players access to more than 19,000 players, spread across 700 teams in 100 stadiums and over 30 leagues in the world."
