The three finalists in 2022's Defensive Player of the Award were Mikal Bridges, Marcus Smart, and Rudy Gobert. As announced earlier this week, Marcus Smart is the first guard since Gary Payton to win the honorable award.
There's been a lot of contention over who should have won this year's award. For example, Bam Adebayo showed discontent when he was not named an official finalist. The previous winner twice Giannis Antetokounmpo didn't make the cut, either. Rudy Gobert, who has received the award several times, was also not a winner.
The main question to ask is, which qualities or statistics are the most crucial to identify the best defensive player? The contributor to Bleacher Report explains that the best defensive player is one who excels both individually and when part of a system. I am in agreement and believe that the most effective defensive player is all around the court, and not only on the paint or perimeter.
NBA 2K22 is video game which can recreate the impact that real life NBA players. Being a regular participant in the game, I decided to spotlight key defensive traits from the game to identify the most effective defensive player among the three finalists.
The qualities listed include Perimeter Defense, Interior Defense, Help Defense IQ, and Defensive Consistency according to. The player who scored the highest total score of those categories was determined to be the winner. The following is how each of the candidates performed.
