Despite the strong ties to Melvor Idle and RuneScape, and the involvement direct of Jagex, the publisher opted to keep the game as an original IP instead of making it an official RuneScape spin-off. In part, this was an acknowledgement of the fact that Malcolm had achieved where Jagex was unable to do so.
"We considered the idea of creating an idle RuneScape game some years ago when we released RuneScape: Idle Adventures," Pfeiffer says. "In Alpha, we stopped development and focused our efforts on the core RuneScape games.
We've always believed in that RuneScape's game has potential in the idle space and Melvor Idle has more than proven that RuneScape can be a great idle game. However, Melvor Idle stands up on its own merits too, and we wanted to remain true to the vision for Melvor Idle that Brendan was able to envision when he began making his game."
Pfeiffer also points to the success of Melvor Idle as proof that talent can emerge from the community of any game, something Jagex has discovered already. "We've always found an active RuneScape crowd to be a fantastic resource of potential talent to Jagex not only in terms of game designers but for all the other positions within a studio for games," he says. "RuneScape has seen more than 300 million accounts created in more than 20 years. This means that the talent pool that have played the game is staggering."
