The stairs located north of place of grace lead to the place of activation of The Radahn's Great Rune. To get the Godslayer's Greatsword you must turn south, then walk down the stairs. Keep an eye out to see two Redmane soldiers at the bottom. One is hidden near the corner.
What comes next is an FromSoft favorite that's nearly as famous as Miyazaki's love affair with poison swamps: that old "drop from edge to ledge on your way to the bottom of a great pit" set piece. (See for example: the Great Hollow, Majula, and the Hunter's Workshop). The route is pretty straightforward and your first target is the cage elevator which has the Redmane soldier in the guard, located on the left side of the starting point. The struts that are cracked on your path may break under the weight of you, but it's a scripted event, so there's no harm from the fall . This is your path to walk down.
Go up the elevator and then follow the corridor round the tower. Go up the stairs and open the door at the top. It's an easy way back to the final site of grace. There's a blackflame monk further down the hall with an abundance of skill and deadly incantations however he shouldn't be too much of a threat.
