A discussion about awareness of the Runescape games

Another thing to note regarding the grind is that three original developers who created the game didn't have designs laid out regarding how the pacing and content would work. They placed an utterly arbitrarily chosen number "99" to represent the maximum amount of skill in each area in the hope of that being so high, no one would actually ever get to this point in any meaningful timeframe, and also for reasons like being utterly lacking in content, making it virtually unusable.
To their astonishment, people did not just acquire certain abilities to 99, but many also started to try to reach the exp limit (because it takes time to progress but any experience above level 99, was utterly worthless at the time). The thing is though, the skills of all were very different in terms of exp per hour rates. Their "99" max level placeholder "not being usable" was actually used for one skill, Prayer (this skill never actually was able to be reached at the 99 level until before its introduction in Runescape 2 version of the game was released). Other skills, like Cooking, were easier to attain to 99 levels.
This idea led to the first standard venerations among the player base (basically it was one of the things players saw as the main objective of the game and something everyone aspired to achieve , since it generally resulted in respect and admiration when other players would learn about your abilities). Many players who play today consider such admiration almost stupid because most people today would think you're basically a "fucking nerd". As the time investiture makes all other MMOs look like a joke.
The ideas of alts and things of that nature (while first of all being against the rules) weren't something people were thinking about as the primary account was so difficult to "max out" (as I've said nobody was able to do so, in the original iteration of the game). There were alt accounts, but they were more on the lines of curious offshoot sort of accounts. They were known as "skills" which meant they would try and maintain the base Overall Combat Level that was 3 (this is what the game opens with, whereas the maximum highest combat level was 123) however, they were trying to maintain this level 3 while keeping their non-combat skill as high as possible.
So what would look like a noob player at face worth, could actually be an extremely committed player who tried their best to avoid combat , but also improve their skills which took a lot of effort generally. It was viewed as awesome and it is until today. I can imagine (I had to leave a while back however this was more impressive back in the days, when if you accidental went by some monster who was threatening your character, you had to endure 3 rounds of back-and-forth attacks between the adversaries and, if you killed it, you had to exp, which led to an increase in exp. Additionally, you could also get exp in the event of your death (which was quite common in the beginning when you're at level 3.).
