The idea has been in the making for a long time. The time had to be just right for my brand. Working with the Madden people to get things sorted out, make sure to cross all the i's, connect all the dots -Once we had it done, everything else was just a matter of going for it. I thought that somewhere in my history I had done something right so that I could continue to be considered one of the most famous athletes from over thirty years ago. Madden still thinks enough of me to do something like this.
The legacy of your video game goes back to 1989, when you became the center of attention at Tecmo Bowl. What was it like seeing yourself in the past?
I still see myself in Tecmo Bowl. I've got the video game. I still have the device in which to run it. But it's in a box somewhere in storage. It's iconic. It really makes me feel happy knowing that I have grown-ups in their 40s saying"Hey, my friend and I got into the most intense struggle of our life because we all wanted to be in Tecmo Bowl when we were young. Therefore, our parents seized the game and my dad locked it away in his tools cabinet. We were unable to play it for about a month as the fighting was so intense. I hear it often. When I attend sports memorabilia shows, people will come up with this video game. They'll say, "I've have the game machine I played it on. My kids play it. My grandkids also play it ... and everybody has a debate about who's going to take on the role of Bo Jackson.' Tecmo Bowl ... that was quite a bit of technology in the past. If you look it up now and you're like, "Wow this is an old fashioned.'
