Madden team is also known for their ability to alter ratings

We collected data that included player maximum speed in their career, previous year's average max speed for each game, current year average maximum speed per game, and combine 40-yard dash times and then fed the results into a multilevel model1 that could forecast Game 9 Madden Speed Scores.
We had decent success. Based on the results, Madden game designers aren't simply employing 40 times (which do not exist for the majority of teams in the league) to score players; they're also using the data from the NFL's Next Gen Stats tracking data to help generate their scores.
They're being smart about it also. Judging from the model and the conversations with an insider at EA that the Madden rating team weighs the speed of the current season more than in the past, and the model suggests that tight ends receive the biggest boost in score due to their speed being higher than their peers, followed closely by quarterbacks.
There's a possibility that opinions are included in the scores as well because a quantitative analysis isn't enough to explain all the results given by EA. This shouldn't be too surprising.
Madden is known for its erratic ratings. Madden team is also known for their ability to alter ratings when the public's outcry is loud enough: Last year, Madden adjusted Keenan Allen's ratings following the Chargers receiver said he was absconding from the game because of his low numbers.
