There have been several security flaws found in various tech software and applications over the past twelve month. Most notably, Sony's meltdown. Hackers claimed that they had stolen as many 2.2 million credit cards details from nearly 70 million PlayStation network users. increase snapchat score
Snapchat is the latest victim of this security breach. Snapchat allows users the ability to share photos with other friends. The app disappears instantly without any trace after approximately 1-10 seconds depending upon the deliverers settings.
Hackers have now obtained usernames and phone numbers for around 4.6 millions users. The hackers exposed a security hole in the Find Friends' feature. This vulnerability was apparently the source of the breach. Christopher Soghoian, principal technologist with the American Civil Liberties Union, exposed what he believes to be an even more disturbing problem, in that they "demonstrated a cavalier attitude about privacy and security", following reports that security experts had warned the company on at least two separate occasions, about a vulnerability in its system. This is what is really troubling. These security flaws appear to be a precedent for existing software as well as future products and updates. What can we do to make sure that our sensitive information doesn't get hacked, sold or distributed on the internet?
Avivah Litan, Gartner security analyst said that phone numbers were not considered "sensitive" personally identifiable data. These numbers include credit card and social security numbers. Therefore, all kinds of companies can collect them to verify a person's identity.
