Runescape was an early introduction to the internet

Even though Runescape allowed me to play alongside other players, I was initially more interested in crafting an adventure for myself. I crafted a backstory for my character -- she was a blue-haired squire from Al Kharid searching for glory at the kingdoms of Misthalin and Asgarnia -- and earth my way up through levels to carry on tougher quests. When Runescape Classic updated to Runescape 2 in early 2004 (this version is now called Old School Runescape, as its current incarnation is Runescape 3) with a transformative graphic upgrade that lived up to my envisioned expectations, so I finally believed I was playing long enough to feel comfortable interacting with my fellow players.

It seems quaint today, but I had been fascinated with the concept that I could just log into RuneScape and find myself talking to strangers on the internet. I quickly learned the base rules of being a woman playing an MMO, including avoiding players that wrapped around in-game hotspots to hunt for a girlfriend rather than falling for scammers who claimed to trim armor at no cost.

It was one part improvisational acting, two parts storytelling, and three components shyly getting to know each other as players outside RuneScape.

As my parents did not understand I had been playing Runescape along with other people, there were not any rules to govern my own behavior. My very first guild melted away as soon as the school year started and I found another, then another, every time beating out the online skills that would come in handy as the societal media became the new normal for teens in the mid-00s.

I don't know why I stopped playing with Runescape. At some stage Ilost track of my guildmates'd done all of the quests that were free, and moved on.

Well, perhaps it does. For this day I have a preference for fantasy video games. I like dragon-slaying adventures with a great deal of maps and side quests to explore. I enjoy leveling up skills and studying up on lore, crafting cool armor for my personality and anything that allows me roleplay a little as I go. I also spend a lot of time online, connecting with people on social networking, talking about matches, and making online friends who have gone on to hold enormous emotional significance in my life.

Runescape was an early introduction to the internet would eventually become, although it brought me in with all the promise of fun and fantasy, it ultimately gave me a head start in learning the principles of participation for an increasingly internet social landscape.
