Finally event RuneScape gold inspired in July 2018. This two-week long event involved players completing various tasks to make rewards and, in appropriate battle pass style, there were two reward tracks players could follow: a free track and a premium trackthat was purchasable for 400 RuneCoins (approximately пїЎ7). The player base criticised runePass for feeling much like an expansion of the everyday challenge system, instead of being its unique, occasion. The track that was free was also criticised for lacking rewards.
Jagex was aware of the problems with RunePass, but as senior product manager Matt Casey clarified to Eurogamer:"It [RunePass] was probably a little bit hurried and we did not give it enough gestation time that led to a system that didn't offer enough value for gamers. It didn't have sufficient players and rewards felt it did not represent good value." Casey included RunePass, and its successor Yak Track, are"a part of a larger type of initiative for us to look at just how do we evolve our monetisation model and our approach".
For many years the arguments over the execution of monetisation in RuneScape were confined to the game's subreddit and discussion, but in April 2019 Jagex gave oral evidence at the investigation into Immersive and Addictive Technologies run by the Digital, Culture, Media and Sport Committee.
Jagex was invited to appear before the select committee, since, Goddard clarified, the company"leads in areas such as participant safety and player protection". Proof was given by jagex such as EA, Epic Instagram and Games, alongside a variety of societal media firms and other game developers.
The report from this investigation had been released on September 2019. In the written evidence provided by this anonymous person, the complainant claimed that their son"took out cash loans, bank loans and'max'd' outside a credit card", and detailed the way this"financially destroyed our [their own ] retirement programs" as they needed to pay off their son's debt.
