For many years the RuneScape Mobile gold arguments within the implementation of monetisation in RuneScape were confined to the game's subreddit and forums, but in April 2019 Jagex gave oral evidence at the investigation into Immersive and Addictive Technologies conducted by the Digital, Culture, Media and Sport Committee.
Jon Goddard, head of corporate communications at Jagex, clarified to Eurogamer that Jagex was approached"straight by the select committee to take part in the process and were encouraged to attend and give oral evidence straight into the committee". Jagex was encouraged to appear before the select committee, since, Goddard explained, the firm"contributes to areas such as participant safety and player protection". Jagex gave proof alongside a variety of other game developers and social media companies, including EA, Epic Games and Instagram.
The report from this analysis was released on 12th September 2019. Controversially, the report also contained an anonymous complaint from the parents of an adult player, who had reportedly spent in excess of пїЎ50,000 on RuneScape. In the written evidence supplied with this anonymous individual, the complainant claimed that their son"took out cash loans, bank loans and'max'd' outside a charge card", and detailed the way this"financially destroyed our [their own ] retirement programs" as they had to pay off their son's debt.
Goddard explained, about this particular instance:"We [Jagex] were unable to entirely corroborate the details which were filed to the committee with our own documents - there just wasn't an exact match, so it's very difficult once the complaint or the evidence is submitted by someone who's not the account holder."
Jagex is awaiting feedback from the committee, which was delayed due to the election. Goddard commented that, even though Jagex is waiting for the answer,"not only are we in a powerful position already to answer many of the suggestions they may make, but we're also attempting to be far ahead of it", and"I do not feel that any business needs to sit back and think they do everything right when it comes to player support and participant safety.
