RuneScape was the RuneScape gold introduction

RuneScape was the RuneScape gold introduction to the world of massively multiplayer online role-playing games for several gamers; where many of us met our first online buddies and learnt about that MMORPG levelling grind from hours of fishing. Even in the event that you've never played RuneScape, then you probably had a friend who did, or there is a possibility that, like me, you're playing to this day.
I have been playing RuneScape, together with the break, for 13 years. During these years I've witnessed both the lows, such as the removal of PvP from the Wilderness involving the highs, along with 2007 to 2011, such as the release of Old School RuneScape in 2013. I have completed fantastic quests filled with rewarding challenges and great storylines (my favorites are Ritual of this Mahjarrent and While Guthix Sleeps). The time that I've spent in Gielinor also means I have seen the rise of monetisation and microtransactions in RuneScape.
As a subscription RuneScape has had an element of pay-to-play because the membership program was released in February 2002. Since then the membership cost has slowly risen, but it took 10 years for developer Jagex to present a new form of monetisation and it had been known as Squeal of Fortune. The concept was simple - gamers could win prizes, coins for example, by spinning a wheel. Each player received a certain number of free spins while spins bought using real-world currency or could be earned in-game. Players were quick to criticise the feature as being a form of real-world gambling, which RuneScape has a long history of fighting against.
Back in April 2012, Jagex redefined the principle about real world gambling in RuneScape, saying:"Real-world trading is the term utilized for activities which occur outside of the game environment that result in the real world purchase or purchase of items, gold items or services with the intention of supplying or advancing a Jagex in-game personality other than by the means that are incorporated into the game." This change explains that any kind of monetisation is omitted from this principle and that trading has to involve a third party. But criticism of Squeal of Fortune continued, until it had been replaced with Treasure Hunter at February 2014.
