Click here to write your articleOne cold, rainy Boston day in 2017, New England head coach Bill Belichick stopped quoting Sun Tzu for a moment so he could deal with the crowd at a Patriots Super Bowl victory parade. Belichick had an idea--he'd begin a chant. This is something he had seen people do. You simply take a bunch of words and say them loud and dumb. It was a specific day, Belichick thought. Something new would try.
"No! Days! Off!" Belichick bellowed, pumping his decoration, a chrome phallus, to punctuate every word. Confusion spread among the players assembled on the stage near Belichick. They had never cheered for a lack of vacation time before. Since it was an awkward thing to chant. Days! Off!" The players and the crowd slowly joined in, for Belichick's chanting was as relentless as it was bizarre, and everybody was scared to see what would happen if they neglected to echo the dark wizard's incantations. Even the free marketplace was loath to cross Belichick: Over days, T-shirts bearing the trainer's dour term were sold online to enthusiasts who had to admit that, somehow,"No Days Off" was now a thing.
For his role, Belichick has to have been exhilarated. He began a chant! But in the months and years that followed, he'd be plagued by a lingering doubt. In all their Super Bowl-winning campaigns, the Patriots finished the regular season as either the 1- or the 2-seed in the AFC, which brought them a bye from the Wild Card round of the playoffs. That is to saythey took off. You see the problem.
The Patriots were in line to get a first-round bye, as this season drew to a close. But the Patriots played a listless and diffident game against Miami. Notably, with more than a minute to go before halftime, Belichick let the clock run down rather than allow his six-time-Super-Bowl-winning quarterback attempt to score some things. It appeared like the coach was throwing the game. Of course he was! Since the No. 3 seed, New England will have to win four consecutive matches to be crowned winner --the purpose being, they will get no days off. Having accomplished each other succeed the league could possibly offer himthis really is Belichick's last piece of unfinished business. He understands --he should have begun that darn chant in the first location! He must have left the chanting into the professionals. Nonetheless, it's too late for that. He should produce the chant authentic.
