"Mod" in runescape doesn't mean only moderator in the way that it is commonly used (as in a volunteer runescape participant helper or a neighborhood manager). You will find runescape player mods and forum mods, which can be volunteers, yes, but they do not really have access to anything important and don't have"Mod X" as their name - those are only Jagex Mods - as in Jagex workers. This dude was runescape's content programmer, so he had access to runescape backend, which he misused to steal the stuff and which was the reason why he had to flee the actual country because the firm probably pursued legal action against him as a result of this. Also, so far as I can tell from the wiki, runescape players needed their stuff returned all so hopefully all's well there.
As much as this is inexcusable and easy to avoid, it is also a trap a lot of game developers fall into when small groups of developers'go rogue', so to speak, in creating a niche part of runescape. OSRS simply doesn't have the oversight that RS3 has (and neither should it, since it might draw the interest of the investors and Tencent now gambling on RS3's MTX) which leads to a much easier time for employees to do things that they really should not.
I had my accounts. I had 2FA's (like in several 2FA for my email account and my RS accounts ) on. I have different passwords for my account and multiple mails (just one for the authenticator and then one to the runescape account). Took a three month break and my gold was gone and my account was used for bot mining. 2FA was turned off with no access. This story broke. Folks suppose I had been doing some thing sketch or that I leaked my password.
