The major attraction is that the Immortal Syndicate. This courageous group of villains and scum is currently performing necromancy crimes! --that they really shouldn't be permitted to do. To prevent them, you'll need to hunt down members from the organisation's four branches and ruin their aims. Everything you do after you defeat them is the place where the new system gets really interesting.
See, you don't need to kill them. Alternatively, you can interrogate and deal together, learning about the structure of this organisation and who you need to take out following. You may even sweet talk them. It is like the Nemesis system from Shadow of all Mordor/War, essentially, and it's about time we watched more developers taking a page from Monolith's publication.
The good news is all those safehouses contain a great deal of lovely loot--the real reason you're saving the world.
Path of Exile Betrayal adds Shadow of the Nemesis platform of Mordor
Over the past year, Path of Exile received three major expansions that each added a significant new feature. Bestiary, for example, took some inspiration out of Pokemon by letting players catch and fight creatures, whereas Delve added an infinite dungeon to explore. Normally, these leagues--since they are called--are temporary occasions which just last for a few months prior to the next large update comes along and retires those features. But maybe not this time.
As part of a greater strategy to overhaul one of Path of Exile's most obsolete systems, its latest expansion is attracting those three leagues back (along with a fresh one) and weaving them in the core game. It is among the largest changes to Path of Exile because The Fall of Oriath added six new story chapters.
