RuneScape was the hangout of choice

Many MMOs lead you on a campaign that introduces the most important characters, areas and activities, and only then do they take the leash off and let you do whatever you want. That last bit is where Old School Runescape begins. It's a sandbox MMORPG that is intentionally grindy and intimidatingly hands-off.
You go through a five-minute tutorial that teaches you the absolute bare minimum and then you're unceremoniously dropped to the hometown of Lumbridge. It's the type of game where you need to bookmark the wiki until you can get anywhere. But if you're eager to push through the brutal learning curve, and should you discover Runescape's freewheeling sense of adventure liberating instead of overwhelming, you might well find your forever game.
Part of the motive Old School Runescape is so bad at describing itself boils to its own heritage. A decade ago, there wasn't any Old School Runescape. There was only Runescape. But following a major update completely overhauled Runescape and turned it into what has become colloquially known as Runescape 3.
Jagex ran a survey to see if players wanted independent servers in which they might play Runescape as it had been back in the day. So, the threadbare tutorial is more than sufficient for people who've played Runescape earlier (like myself). Nevertheless, Old School could still stand to direct new players a bit better, since it's completely unlike other MMOs.
Everyone has the same 23 abilities, which could broadly be grouped into battle abilities like Power and Ranged, crafting skills such as Herblore and Fletching, and gathering skills such as Fishing and Mining. All skills start at level one and move around 99 as you gain experience by dealing damage, crafting potions, catching fish and so forth. To put it differently, you are not a mage, you have high Magic.
