RuneScape Classic is, essentially, a snapshot of RuneScape since it originally released in 2001. That first version has observed two major improvements in the years since, also as (slightly confusingly) the arrival of Old School RuneScape - a variant of the game more or less as it was in 2007.
Since RuneScape has grown and evolved however, RuneScape Classic has continued to live on in a dusty corner of Jagex's servers. It's not updated or formally supported by the programmer, but access is still allowed to particular players.
In its post announcing RuneScape Classic's closed, Jagex clarified that"It's been amazing to see such dedication amongst those of you who have kept playing RuneScape Classic within the last few years [...] But it is not all fun and games.
"With improvements in technology helping to further encourage both RuneScape and Old School RuneScape, our tools are no more compatible with Vintage. This is especially a problem with our community security and macro detection tools. The game is now easily abused with the use of 3rd party macro tools, and botting is getting an increasing issue."
Worse still, says Jagex, is the simple fact that it"can no more offer you long-term service reliability due to the growing risk of unrecoverable game breaking bugs". The bugs, it stresses, can not be fixed"due to the unsupported nature of the match".
